A NUMBER of deliberately started open-air fires had emergency services scrambling this week.

Three fires were started along Woodhead Lane, Blacker Hill, between 4.55pm and 5.40pm on Wednesday. The largest fire, which stretched across a 2500sqm area, was started at 4.55pm and took almost an hour for a crew from Tankersley to extinguish.

A crew from Barnsley was then called to the same location at 5.16pm, where they spent 45 minutes extinguishing another blaze, and the Tankersley crew was called back to the same spot at 5.40pm.

Elsewhere, a number of other deliberate grass fires occurred on the same evening.

At 4.47pm on Darton Lane, Mapplewell, a fire on 100sqm of grass and stubble took three hours to be extinguished by a crew from Cudworth.

A blaze on a small piece of grassland on Priory Road, Lundwood, was extinguished at 5.46pm.

A grass verge on Kingsmark Way, Goldthorpe, was set alight at 4.57pm, with the fire occuring across 100sqm of grassland.
