TWO more cheques were presented this week to organisations awarded grants through the Barnsley Chronicle Stronger Together programme.

Grants of up to £1,000 are available through the £15,000 scheme, which is a partnership between the Chronicle and the South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner Dr Alan Billings.

A grant of £897 has been awarded to surplus food redistribution charity FareShare Yorkshire, based at Wombwell, to provide a programme of training for ten unemployed volunteers to help turn their lives around.

And Barnsley-based charity IDAS (Independent Domestic Abuse Service) based at The Core in Barnsley town centre was presented with £988.99 towards a project which helps prevent young people falling into unhealthy relationships.

Dr Billings said: “Most of my time is spent talking about crime and the darker side of human life, so it really is good to see people doing such good things in our community.

“FareShare is doing a lot of really great things all in one go, it’s stopping food being thrown away and wasted, it’s helping unemployed people move on with their lives, and it’s helping many charities and vulnerable people by supplying the food.

“IDAS is a really important cause because domestic abuse has come so much more to the fore, it’s always happened of course but I think we’re all so much more aware of it now.

“It’s vital we help people who are vulnerable in places and situations where they ought to feel safe.”
