THE National Grid has been given consent in order to continue its renewal programme which has seen miles of Barnsley’s overhead power lines replaced.

The latest stretch to be approved runs from Barugh to Elmhirst Lane, Dodworth. Existing wires, which carry 66,000 volts of electricity, have never been replaced before and 17 wooden masts will also be removed.

“We’ve been working on the development of this project for several years in order to ensure that we are as effective as possible, and cause as little disruption as possible to the local area,” a National Grid spokesman said. “This work will allow us to remove the masts and 11 spans of 66,000-volt overhead line improving both the aesthetic of the locality and the network’s resilience.”
