MORE than 600 people have gained employment in social care for adults and young people over the last ten years after completing the council’s Future Carers programme over the last decade.

Barnsley Mayor Coun Linda Burgess joined local employers, training staff and carers who have gained employment through the scheme - run in partnership with Job Centre Plus and adult skills and community learning - at a special celebration event at Shaw Lane sports club to mark the ten year milestone.

Workforce development manager, Trevor Hewitt, said: “In celebrating ten years of the Barnsley Future Carers programme we have the pleasure of celebrating a Barnsley success story.

“It is an initiative which creates opportunities for people who are unemployed to explore their potential to work in the social care sector, ensuring they have a clear understanding of the role, are fully committed and ready to make a positive contribution.”
