WHEN Lindsey Smith wanted gentle organic clothes for her newborn twins she came up against a problem.

They were not easy to find. After exhaustive searches of the internet, she found what she wanted but felt that such items ought to be more accessible.

So she has now started her own online children’s clothing business selling clothes which are made ethically and only from organic materials.

And, eventually, she hopes to open a shop so that more people can access organic goods.

“When I had the twins, I wanted to buy clothes made organically as they are much kinder to the skin. No chemicals are involved,” said Lindsey, 38, of High Street, Great Houghton.

I found it difficult to get these items and they were only available online. It is something I am really interested in as well as the ethics involved.

“I only buy from companies which pay fair wages and have good conditions. No sweatshops.”

After hatching the idea, she contacted manufacturers of the clothes she likes and found there is a big online community for organic clothing.

“It grew from there and six months ago I began ordering to build up stock,” said Lindsey. Now the business called Minillie is up and running.

The title comes from letters in the names of the twins Millie and Mitch. Lindsey, who is a part-time primary school teacher, also has a daughter, Jade, 17, studying photography at Barnsley College.

She has already made a few sales and some collections are going really well. “The signs are good,” said Lindsey.

“I have a lot of work to do but it is looking positive.

“So I will be very busy with hard work, late nights and lots of coffee.”
