POLICE have confirmed a motorcyclist died in a collision in Barnsley yesterday.

Officers are appealing for witnesses after the fatal collision on the A61 Upper Sheffield Road which saw the road closed in both directions for several hours.

A police spokesman said: “At around 4.25pm on Wednesday, emergency services were called following reports of a collision involving a black Land Rover Freelander and a black and grey Moto Guzzi motorcycle, close to the junction with Knowle Road.

“The motorcyclist, a 49-year-old man from Doncaster, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

“His family have been informed and are receiving support.

“Officers are keen to trace the driver of a white van, believed to have been travelling along the same road shortly prior to the collision, as they believe he may have vital information.”

Anyone who witnessed the collision, or has any information that may be able to assist officers with their enquiries, is asked to call 101 quoting incident number 706 of November 15.
