Alex Mowatt is hoping his former Oxford United team-mates can hand Barnsley the League One title tomorrow.

The 24-year-old central midfielder spent last season on loan at Oxford, who visit current leaders Luton Town on the final day of the season. Both Barnsley and Luton are already promoted but if the Reds – who visit Bristol Rovers – better the Hatters’ result they will finish on top of the table.

Mowatt said: “I have spoken to a few of the boys there and asked them to do us a favour.  “It would be really nice to win the title as well as getting promoted. We celebrated on Tuesday after promotion and we will celebrate in Bristol anyway but it will be even better if we have won the league as well.”

Mowatt signed a new contract during this season and is hoping that his team-mates whose deals are due to expire this season or next do the same and ensure this team stays together in the Championship. He arrived at the club in 2017 as several of the previous promotion team were being sold to other clubs.

This time goalkeeper and captain Adam Davies is out of contract at the end of this season while highly-rated centre-backs Liam Lindsay and Ethan Pinnock have one more year remaining.

“I definitely hope that we stay together for a long time. We have a young, exciting team and, if we all stay together, we can do well in the Championship.”

Mowatt was following the games on Tuesday night as Portsmouth and Sunderland both lost which meant Barnsley were             promoted.  He said: “It was an unbelievable feeling. I was at home watching it with some of my mates. As soon as the results came in, the WhatsApp group chat with all the players in was buzzing then we all met up and went out. It was a crazy and mad night but it was really good. Everyone was just buzzing.”
