Alex Mowatt was brought to Barnsley in January 2017 as the previous promotion squad was being taken apart but is determined to make sure that the momentum from last season does not disappear despite some high-profile departures.
The 24-year-old central midfielder, who played every game for the Reds as they came second in League One, has seen fellow promotion heroes Adam Davies, Liam Lindsay and Ethan Pinnock all leave the club in recent weeks. But he believes the new signings will plug those gaps in the squad and will be made to feel at home by the existing players.
Mowatt told the Chronicle: “We are definitely still confident. The players who have come in have done really well so far and seem really comfortable. Hopefully we can all stick together and have a good season.
“It’s more important to welcome the new players in. You never want to be on your own in the dressing room. We are a friendly group of lads so we will welcome all the new players in.
“We have got a young squad which has got even younger. But everyone is buzzing to go into the Championship season. I have had a great summer and enjoyed myself with some holidays, but it’s good to be back now.”
Mowatt scored the opening goal as Barnsley won their first friendly 5-0 at Stalybridge Celtic on Wednesday.
He said: “We wanted a good run-out in the first game. It was a good win and nice to be playing football again.
“There were a lot of Barnsley fans there and they were quite loud.
“It was a difficult pitch but I think we played some good stuff.”
