BARNSLEY MP Dan Jarvis planted new trees at the Fleets Orchard in Honeywell as part of the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy.

The Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy project was launched in 2015 when all 53 Commonwealth nations were asked to contribute areas of indigenous forest to be preserved in perpetuity to mark Her Majesty’s lifetime of service to the Commonwealth.

The trees planted by Dan are part of a wider project he is taking part in along with more than 500 Members of Parliament from all across the country.

He said: “I am especially delighted that these Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy Trees have been planted at the new Fleets Orchard which is just one part of the project to create a country park on the Fleets Dam site for use by local residents in Honeywell and the wider community in Barnsley.

“The new Fleets Country Park will transform the natural environment in this particular part of our town and I am fully supportive of the project.

“Thanks must go to everyone who has given up their time to get involved in laying the seeds of this new orchard but especially to Pete Wall from the Yorkshire Wild Trust and Andrea Battye from the YMCA, who have worked incredibly hard to make the Orchard a reality.”
