BARNSLEY East MP Stephanie Peacock has challenged the secretary of state for transport Chris Grayling on transport in the north, saying the government needs to ‘get a grip.’

Stephanie questioned the government in the House of Commons on the standard of rail services in Barnsley, making reference to costs, overcrowding and trains that ‘belong in museums’.

Stephanie said: “Every day I receive a number of complaints about the standard of rail services available to people here in Barnsley and indeed across the north.

“Commuters trying to get to and from Barnsley are met with delays, dangerously overcrowded carriages, and trains so old they’re better placed in a museum as a reminder of a bygone age.

“What’s more, people are being asked to pay through the nose for this privilege. It is simply unacceptable.

“This government and its failing transport ministers need to urgently get a grip and provide the modern, safe and reliable services people here in Barnsley need.”
