BARNSLEY is destined for at least one new MP whenever the next election takes place.

Penistone and Stocksbridge MP Angela Smith will not seek re-election in her constituency, she confirmed on Twitter.

She will instead contest a seat in Greater Manchester for the Liberal Democrats, the party she joined recently having quit Labour over its stance on anti-Semitism and other issues. She initially joined the Independent Group but has since defected to the Lib Dems.

Penistone West councillor Hannah Kitching will be the Liberal Democrat candidate for Penistone and Stocksbridge.

Coun Kitching Tweeted: “Delighted to confirm that I will be the Lib Dem candidate fighting to win Penistone & Stocksbridge at the next GE. We love having a * @LibDems MP here & want to keep it that way! Thank you * @angelasmithmp for your kindness and support, all the best for your new opportunity.”

Ms Smith Tweeted: “I’m delighted to be appointed the PPC for Altrincham & Sale West. It’s a great opportunity to beat a Tory Brexiteer MP as well as leading the fight to stop Brexit. It’s been a privilege to represent P&S & I know * @HannahK—LD, will make a great LibDem MP for the constituency.”
