COUNCERNED councillors and community activists have resorted to spray-painting piles of dog muck bright yellow as a drastic measure to try and highlight the scale of the problem.

Coun Dave Leech was among the councillors and other members of St Helen’s Ward Alliance so fed-up with the fouling on New Lodge Village Green that they have begun the process of spraying and ‘logging’ each individual dropping to try and raise awareness and change people’s behaviours.

“It’s a really lovely green and a lot of money’s been spent on it over the years but unfortunately there’s a few residents who are spoiling it by letting their dogs use it as a toilet.”

Coun Leech, who chaired the last meeting of St Helen’s Ward Alliance, said the matter came to a head and it was decided to take drastic action.

“The problem’s definitely getting worse,” he said. “There are some responsible dog owners who are picking up their mess, but they seem to be outnumbered at the moment.”

Once all the fouling has been painted and documented, the team will follow-up with a major cleanup to get the green ready for the summer gala.

“There is no excuse,” he said. “There are bins on there for dog waste, and there’s also normal litter bins. As long as it’s in a bag it can go in a normal bin.”
