Feeding a family on £4 a day seems like an impossible task but one Barnsley mum has done just that.

Barnsley Churches Drop In Project (BCDP) volunteer Kate Raynor had a tight daily budget of £1 per person to put food on the table for her family of four.

She has been making the meagre cash stretch to feed her husband and two children Matthew 13, and Sophie, eight.

The Raynors usually enjoy a fare of curry, fish pie and toad in the hole but as part of a challenge to see what living 'below the breadline is really like' they've been facing a diet of chicken broth and budget bolognaise.

Kate, 31, of Highfield Cottages, Silkstone, has devoted three years of her life to volunteering at the BCDP - where she is also chairwoman.During her week, she comes face to face with local people who find themselves in dire straights so she decided to put her family through the challenge to truly understand what it is like.

She said: "For me the hardest thing is when you speak to someone whose children are going through exactly what they went through, it's like a cycle of misery."

It's all part of a challenge to raise £500 for the BCDP - which feeds an average of 330 struggling locals free meals each week.
