A DISGRUNTLED parent took her children out of school yesterday afternoon in a frosty stand-off over ice cream.

Oakhill Primary Academy at Stairfoot arranged for an ice cream van to visit, and children with 100 per cent attendance could all have an ice cream. But Jennifer Gabbitas said it was humiliating and upsetting for the kids who didn’t get one.

She has three children at the school who she took on a term-time holiday, landing her a £180 fine and meaning they couldn’t have ice creams yesterday.

“Kids can’t help being ill, and they might be too young to understand why they’re being left out,” said Jennifer, 30, of Barnsbridge Grove, Barnsley.

The school declined to comment.
