MUM Kathryn Pickering will be especially proud to see her son complete a 100-mile charity bike ride because he wouldn't be able to do it without the kidney she donated to him.

Chris Pickering, 25, was struck down with severe kidney failure two years ago and required eight hours of kidney dialysis every day just to keep him alive.

It prompted mum Kathryn to give up one of her kidneys which was successfully transplanted last year.

"In my opinion, he wouldn't be around if I hadn't done it," said Kathryn, 52, of Higham Common Road, Barugh Green.

Chris's illness came on very suddenly and he was immediately put on emergency dialysis in May 2013 having previously been perfectly healthy.

To raise money for Kidney Research UK, Chris will take part in the Prudential Ride 100 on August 2.
