A CORONER has agreed to hold an inquest on Wombwell man John Gogarty, who was murdered in July 2015.

His family argued a full inquest could look at whether there were failings by agencies involved with the killer, Ian Birley, who had been out on licence after murdering another man when he killed Mr Gogarty, 65, at his home at Marsh Street.

Birley, who was 43 at the time of the killing, was given a whole life term after the court was told he had killed Barnsley pensioner Maurice Hoyle in 1995.

A date for the inquest has not yet been set.
