EXPERIENCE Barnsley is planning three exhibitions to mark the First World War.

The first will open in September and will cover the first year of the war, looking at local recruitment and local soldiers.

The exhibition will be accompanied by family history surgeries to help local people trace their own WW1 ancestors. There will also be talks from experts and authors on various aspects of the war.

There will be activities for children and hands-on days in the archives and discovery centre when visitors will be able to handle original documents and letters from First World War soldiers.

On October 11 members of the Great War Society will be drilling in the Barnsley Pals Centenary Square in period uniforms with displays of equipment and everyday activities.
