THE OWNERS of a music school on a mission to play a greater role in Barnsley’s music and cultural scene have sponsored the Young Musician category at this year’s Young Champions awards.

Rhythm Inc had been hiding in Barnsley’s side streets and back streets for more than 15 years until last year when they expanded into a new home in the town centre.

Now based in Church Street opposite the main entrance to Barnsley College, Rhythm Inc is right at the centre of Barnsley’s youth musician movement.

Rhythm Inc tutors give instrumental lessons in schools across Barnsley, as well as at their centre which features five private teaching studios.

It is run by professional musicians Ari Rannus and Bob Wynne who know Barnsley is awash with extremely talented young musicians.

“Being a part of this awards programme is a perfect fit for us, as we really want to champion Barnsley’s young students and performers,” said Ari.

“Students who’ve come to us are already benefiting from opportunities to work with us, whether that’s in teaching, professional performance, music production or retail.

“We’re discovering all the time just how much is going off in Barnsley and how much talent there is, but also how much potential there is that we can support in the future.”

Rhythm Inc began in 2002 as a sideline to fill their time between their own university lectures and gigs, but has now grown to a school of 15 full and part time tutors teaching more than 200 students every week.

Thirteen of its tutors are Barnsley College graduates.

“Since we’ve been in the town centre, we’re really seeing what’s been going on while we’ve been in the van for the last 15 years,” said Bob.

“It’s great that there is so much music in the town, a lot of talented musicians, lots of venues supporting live music, and lots of events.

“There is a great music scene which in some ways we’ve been missing out on, and I think there’s lots more to come.”

Ari and Bob are heavily involved in the Barnsley Live festival which is taking place on June 15 - the day after the Young Champions ceremony.
