A MAN who has played in Old Silkstone Brass Band for 70 years after promising his mother to learn how to play the cornet has been nominated for his exceptional achievement.

Leslie Turner started at the age of ten, when he returned home from the bandroom with a cornet.

He went on to become one of the best euphonium players in the north and was sought after by many of the area's top bands.

But Leslie, of Martin Croft, Silkstone, always stayed loyal to Silkstone and has now been nominated in the Proud of Barnsley awards by his son John.
