Two mystery members of the public were captured on CCTV trying to stop two men who had broken in to a beauty salon at Barnsley College by smashing the windows.

The college's marketing manager, Lindsay Garfitt, said security footage shows two men shattering the windows of Images salon, at the front of the Old Mill Lane campus, at about 4.40am yesterday.

It then shows two drivers stop their cars and try to stop the offenders, who manage to get away.

Lindsay said: "You can see they have tried to stop these men so we want to thank those people."

She said police had gone through security footage from a camera pointing directly at the salon, which shows the men, thought to be in their 20s, breaking the windows before entering the salon and stealing beauty products.

Lindsay added: "It looks like they have taken some GHD hair straighteners, which were actually dummy models, a hair dryer and a GHD gift set.

She said the incident hadn't affected trade at the salon and it was 'business as usual' with appointments transferred to an upstairs salon in the college.
