THE tradition of Wednesday night late night shopping for Christmas is dead according to traders.
A few weeks ago the Alhambra decided it was going to open on Friday nights instead, saying Wednesdays had been less fruitful in recent years.
This week, by 6.15pm, Game and the Christmas Shop were the only stores open in Cheapside.
James Robinson, of The Christmas Shop, said: "It's always been Wednesday nights in Barnsley.
"We'll have to try opening Fridays instead. If we do, are we going to see the same numbers of people on Fridays as we used to on Wednesdays? We don't know."
