NATWEST says it will carry out a 'thorough review' into how it reached its decision to close the Royston branch following the 'save our bank' campaign.

Residents were only informed of the closure in August, giving just three months' notice.

NatWest stated that the branch did not have the technology to link it to their main systems and said that alternative banking provision was available at the Post Office, online and by telephone.

Residents reacted angrily, claiming they had not been consulted about the closure and that the alternative provision was not suitable.

Fred Harston, chair of Royston TARA, said they are ultimately hoping for a U-turn on the decision to close the bank.

"There will be new housing being built all over the area, we need a choice of how we bank."
