DISCOUNT supermarket chain Aldi has been given the go ahead to build a new store on the outskirts of Barnsley town centre despite concerns from a councillor that it could lead to other supermarkets pulling out of the area.

Proposals to transform a plot of land next to the Wickes store off Old Mill Lane - on the former National Grid site - have been approved by planning officials.

The development, expected to create 40 new jobs, received overwhelming public support with 90 letters sent to the council by residents saying they were in favour of the new store.

However, Coun Dick Wraith expressed concern about the plans and possible increased congestion in that area.
