MORE police operations to rid knife crime from Barnsley’s streets are on the way to the town.

As part of a national scheme, dubbed Operation Sceptre, covert and overt operations and high visibility policing have been taking place across the town already this year.

The project last took place in Barnsley alongside the high-visibility Operation Duxford in February, although under-the-radar work has been carried out since, according to the police.

A total of 106 knives were recovered by officers during last month’s week-long campaign, with engagement events being held at Asda, on Old Mill Lane, Tesco, Stairfoot, Barnsley Interchange, Barnsley Hospital and shopping areas in Cudworth, Goldthorpe, Hoyland and Wombwell.

Barnsley’s four neighbourhood policing teams - based in the town centre, Goldthorpe, Kendray and Royston - will continue to host events in local areas identified as being of concern to speak with young people to raise awareness of the grave consequences.
