DRUG users across Barnsley are being encouraged to review their cannabis consumption.

The Barnsley Recovery Service has launched ‘Barnsley’s Respect THC’ campaign.

It aims to help those who are concerned about the amount of cannabis they smoke, using posters and social media to help people understand the issues around using cannabis and showing easy ways people can get support from the Barnsley service.

Emily Todd, director of services for West and South Yorkshire, said: “More people who use cannabis are becoming aware of the potential problems associated with the drug.

“In general, cannabis sold on the street is getting stronger, with higher levels of THC, the compound that effects the brain. Stronger cannabis can result in users experiencing a number of issues, including anxiety, depression and mental health problems.

“We hope that by providing more information on the negative effects of cannabis, anyone in Barnsley who has a problem themselves or knows someone who does can speak to us about the advice and support we provide.”

Research has shown regular users of high-potency cannabis carry the highest risk of psychotic disorders.
