TWO Barnsley-born women have returned to their roots in opening a new ladies’, fashion boutique in a building once home to the Co-op.

Christine Wood and Gilly Rock, both 53, have opened Izzi this week in the former pet supplies store on Towngate, Mapplewell. The building dates back to about 1890 and was a school before being home to the Co-op around the turn of the last century.

Christine, of Flockton, was born in Mapplewell, and Gilly, of Horbury, was born in Barnsley.

“It’s a fine old building with a lot of history,” said Christine. “I have 30 plus years experience in retail, Gilly has been shopping for those 30 years, and I’m not joking.

“We did quite a bit of market research and Mapplewell was where we wanted to be.

“It’s a really up and coming place, there’s some lovely bars, restaurants, it’s thriving really.

“I think in villages people do look to support local businesses.”

The shop will sell ladies fashion for adults of all ages, and for all occasions, as well as home furnishings.

“We have something for everyone, from going out gear to casual wear, as well as home furnishings ranging from table mats to a butcher’s block.

“There isn’t anything else similar anywhere in the area.”
