THE LABOUR Party has chosen its candidate to contest the Barnsley East seat in the June election - a trade union official for the West Midlands.

Stephanie Peacock, former partner of the party’s deputy leader Tom Watson, was selected by a panel made up of members of the party’s ruling national executive committee.

The race to find a successor for MP Michael Dugher follows his shock announcement last Thursday that he will not be standing in the election on June 8.

Mr Dugher told the Chronicle Barnsley is getting a ‘big hitter’ in Stephanie, 30, as she’s ‘not afraid to tell it like it is’.
