MORE details about the new £5.3m central library - due to open next spring - have been revealed by the council this week.

The Library@theLightbox, currently under construction in May Day Green, will be a ‘welcoming hub for the community’ across four floors.

The reading lounge on the ground floor will be for young children, with access to reading and audiobooks, games and interactive technology to help spark imagination and creativity.

The first floor will be the place to ‘study, learn and reflect’ with public access to technology for homework, assignments, college projects and group study.

Businesses will have access to a bookable training suite for up to 20 people with an interactive touchscreen.

The third-floor events space and open roof terrace will offer magnificent views over the town as well as opportunities to host functions and events. It will also feature an enclosed gallery with seating for for 60 to 100 people.

The building is part of the £130m town centre redevelopment programme.

Coun Jenny Platts said: “It’s much more than a library, giving people access to a wide range of services, provide venues for community groups, events, and encourage our customers to use technology to experience Virtual Reality, programming, music and dance.

“Storytimes will be more interactive with projection and sound systems, children and parents will be transported to another place fully immersing them in the story. New innovative systems will be introduced for the elderly and special needs groups meaning the building will be accessible to all.”
