AN energy tariff dedicated solely to Barnsley residents is heading to town.

The council-approved Barnsley Energy Tariff aims to provide fair, transparent, competitive prices and deals.

It will go live on November 12 and the council is urging residents to make the switch.

To lead the way, the authority will switch council homes to the new tariff when they become empty.

This will entail removing pre-pay meters and replacing them with smart meters.

Coun Roy Miller, a spokesman for the council’s ruling cabinet, said: “We are delighted to be launching the Barnsley Energy Tariff and hope many people will make the switch.

“With some 11,572 households in fuel poverty across the borough, this provides a great opportunity to reduce these figures by helping residents access fair energy deals which are right for them.

“It is easy to fall into the trap of sticking with an existing energy provider - whether for convenience or through fear of leaping into the unknown. It is reckoned that 40 per cent of people nationwide have never switched suppliers and so could be paying up to £300 a year more than they need to.

“With the cold months looming, this is the ideal time to switch, reduce bills and keep warm.

“The new tariff scheme is not for profit, meaning residents can be put first and benefit directly through lower bills and fairer deals.”
