PLANS for a new NHS blood centre have been submitted to Barnsley Council.

The 7,200 sqm development at Capitol Park, Dodworth, will include a laboratory and administrative centre.

The specialist services moving to Barnsley are all provided to hospitals and help match patients for blood, organ and stem cell transplants.

The new centre will replace centres in Leeds and Sheffield which will close by 2020, and will lead to improved services and save the NHS money - as much as £1m per year in running costs.

The Leeds and Sheffield sites needed about £16m spent on them over the next ten years. Comments on the planning application can be made until August 10.
