BARNSLEY Council now has more muscle to flex in its fight against antisocial behaviour after the ruling cabinet rubber stamped a raft of new powers.

The raft of new powers now available to the council include community protection notices - to deal with particular, ongoing problems or nuisances affecting a community's quality of life - and public space protection orders, designed to stop individuals or groups committing antisocial behaviour in a public space. Both powers, if flouted, can result in a fine or court action.

Other tools include 48-hour closure powers for premises being used to commit nuisance or disorder; civil injunctions, criminal behaviour orders and community triggers.
