THE new McDonald’s drive-through restaurant planned on the edge of the town centre will require changes to the road layout close to Morrisons, planning documents submitted this week reveal.

Planning permission for the new restaurant on the former Gala Bingo site, Upper New Street, was granted last year but one of the conditions was that before work started, detailed drawings for the access arrangements had to be submitted.

The new restaurant will be accessed from Upper New Street, which will become four lanes for a short distance between the mini-roundabout and the junction with Westway.

There will remain one lane for traffic coming off Westway towards Morrisons and three lanes leaving Morrisons towards Westway - including a dedicated lane for traffic turning right into McDonald’s.

All vehicles coming out of McDonald’s will have to turn left - there will be no right turn towards Westway.

Demolition of the former buildings is now complete, and a McDonald’s spokesman told the Chronicle last week that building work would be starting this summer.
