A FORMER job centre building in the centre of Goldthorpe will be turned into nine apartments.

Applicant Roger Beecroft’s plan for the venue, on High Street, was approved this week by councillors on Barnsley’s planning board.

The plans generated a 147-signature petition against the proposal, with objectors claiming the facility would add to the area’s antisocial behaviour concerns.

Mr Beecroft said: “We manage more than 1,200 local properties and the average age of our tenants is 44. These will be self-contained apartments and we’ll be actively looking for working or retired tenants to occupy them.

“We don’t house under 25-year-olds. This scheme represents a significant investment into bringing a building back into use via a £120,000 refurbishment.”
