A NEW town centre school will be built alongside the Barnsley Sports Academy at the Honeywell Campus.

The £3m Elements Primary School is the first free school in Barnsley to receive approval from the government.

As a free school, it means funding still comes from the government but it is not controlled by Barnsley Council.

The location was announced yesterday by Mark Wilson, chief executive officer of Wellspring Academy Trust, who said the site was chosen because it will give students access to sport and gym facilities which could possibly be opened up to the public.

The building will include 14 classrooms, office space and a hall and will cater for as many as 420 pupils when full.

A six week consultation period will now be held for people to express their views and concerns.

Parents and residents will also have the opportunity to meet the people behind the school on November 24 at the Digital Media Centre and on December 10 at Honeywell Sports Centre between 4-7pm.
