FORMER shadow education secretary Angela Rayner has said a new school will be built in Barnsley under a Labour government if there is a requirement for one.

Mrs Rayner visited Darton College with Barnsley Central candidate Dan Jarvis and Barnsley East candidate Stephanie Peacock to talk with headteacher Kate Davies about cuts to education.

She said Conservative cuts of £3billion could see schools like Darton lose money to the equivalent of four teachers.

Ms Rayner, who is the Labour parliamentary candidate for Ashton-Under-Lyne, said: “Darton was one of the schools under Labour’s Schools for the Future and we can see how it has transformed education and improved learning for young people in the area.

“All this is at risk because the Conservatives have put a £3billion cut within their formula, and schools like this are looking at a potential of four teachers - that’s the equivalent they will lose in money.”
