Barnsley-born Ed Clancy finished outside the medals in fifth place in the omnium at the World Track Championships over the weekend despite winning three of the six events.
The omnium – in which Clancy claimed bronze at the London Olympics in 2012 – is a multi-discipline event which takes place over two days. The 28-year-old – who grew up in Ingbirchworth and attended Springvale Primary School in Penistone – won the flying lap, scratch race and 1k time-trial but finished eighth in the elimination race, 13th in the points race and had a disastrous individual pursuit.
His overall placing of fifth was the joint highest achieved by any British male in a disappointing competition for the previously all-conquering team. At the start of what Clancy called a 'nightmare week', he finished eighth in the men's team pursuit in which he has set world records and win Olympic golds.
Clancy tweeted: "Won 3 events but finished 5th overall in omnium. Given I (have) been struggling this week, it's not a bad way to end."
