Barnsley slipped back into the relegation zone with a disastrous 6-0 loss at home to Charlton Athletic on Saturday which saw them finish with nine men.

Stephen Dawson was sent off for a wild, two-footed lunge on 65 minutes then Tom Kennedy was also red-carded late on for blocking a player's route to goal.

They are both expected to miss the next three games and only be able to play in the final match of the season at Huddersfield. Barnsley now have one central midfielder available in David Perkins and three defenders in Martin Cranie, Bobby Hassell and Scott Wiseman. Stephen Foster injured his calf during the match.

Charlton took the lead after three minutes when Luke Steele spilled Yann Kermorgant's shot and Bradley Pritchard netted from close range.

Visiting captain Johnnie Jackson made it 2-0 on 18 minutes when he showed great skill to go through on goal then nutmegged Steele.

The killer goal was just after the break when Kermorgant headed in Rhoys Wiggins' cross.

Callum Harriott made it 4-0 on 59 minutes with a 20-yard shot that Steele should have saved then substitute Salim Kerkar hit the fifth after a scramble in the Barnsley box.

Ricardo Fuller netted the sixth late on with a fine curling shot from the edge of the area which proved to be the last kick of the game.

The Reds are now back in 22nd position after fellow strugglers Blackburn, Huddersfield and Peterborough won.
