NOT many nine-year-olds would take on an extreme obstacle course to raise money for a local charity but that is why Mason Coles has been nominated for a Proud of Barnsley Award.

Last month, Mason decided to take part in the Overload Run which is an obstacle and mud run that sees participants challenging themselves across a 6km long lap where they have to run, jump and climb over a number of different obstacles in all weathers.

However, instead of doing just one lap, Mason decided to run a total of four laps which came to around 15 miles that he ran in just over five hours and tackled a total of over 200 obstacles.

Mason decided to take part in the run to do something special to raise money for Barnsley Hospice as it’s a charity that he holds very close to his heart.

His great grandma received care from the hospice so he decided that it would be a nice thing to do to raise money for them.

All together Mason managed to raise a total of £388.

On the day of the run Mason had to deal with all kinds of weather conditions from rain to sun to wind and even hailstone.

He was that cold due to the weather that after each lap he completed, his mum Claire had to dry him off and put him in new clothes to keep him from freezing.

Claire, described him as her ‘hero’ and said he did ‘absolutely amazing’ on the day. “He never gave up and he just carried on going,” she said.

Talking about the run, Mason, of Darley Avenue, Athersley, said: “I’m really really happy to be nominated for a Proud of Barnsley award.

“The run was quite hard sometimes but I did enjoy most parts of it and it was all for a really good cause.”
