Barnsley are happy with their current squad and will only bring in new players if either Tom Kennedy or Jack Butland gets injured.
The Reds currently have more than 30 players on professional deals and have at least two players for every position except left-back where Kennedy is the only natural choice, although attacker Reuben Noble-Lazarus and defenders Scott Wiseman, Bobby Hassell and Martin Cranie have played there before.
But, while manager David Flitcroft has previously said that he is actively seeking back-up for Kennedy in the form of a new loan signing – which would take the Reds to the maximum of five for a matchday squad – the Chronicle understands that he and the Reds board have now decided that they will monitor the availability of players in that position but only bring one in if Kennedy gets injured.
The same is true of goalkeepers because, with Luke Steele still not fully over his back injury and teenager Christian Dibble not deemed ready for the bench, Jack Butland has been the only available stopper and the Reds would be in need of a replacement if the England international were to get injured or suspended.
Manager David Flitcroft said: "We are one injury away from being too low on numbers in defence so have irons in the fire. "We got a lead off a Premier League club that we will chase up next week."
