Barnsley head coach Lee Johnson says he was disappointed when goalkeeping coach Mark Crossley left for Chesterfield last week but is now sifting through an unexpectedly high number of applications for his replacement.

Anthony White, who worked with Johnson at his former club Oldham, is understood to be likely to stay with the Latics but the Reds' boss is confident of finding the right man.

Johnson said: "I have been pleasantly surprised by the level of interest. We have had a lot of CVs handed in and we just need to look through them all now. We don't want to rush into a decision.

"We have to get the right personality who will fit into our group as well as the right coach to improve our goalkeepers."

Crossley, who lives in Elsecar and is from Hoyland, left Oakwell on Thursday to join his former Wales team-mate Dean Saunders at his old club Chesterfield. Johnson said: "I was disappointed to lose Mark. I have had 12 staff poached in 18 months now which is annoying.  But I enjoyed working with him in the short time we were together and I wish him all the best."

Goalkeeper is the one position Barnsley are not looking to recruit in this summer as Ross Turnbull is making an impressive recovery from an operation. He is likely to battle for the number one shirt with Adam Davies who has just signed a two-year deal.

Johnson said: "I'm not looking for any goalkeepers because we have some very good ones already. Ross has been training at the club after his operation and he is looking really good. He looks mobile and he has lost quite a bit of weight."
