A CHARITY community group has been nominated for an award for its 'inspirational' work with disadvantaged Barnsley youngsters.

The Exodus Project works in some of the neediest parts of the borough with children aged eight to 15 to help raise their self esteem and realise their future aspirations.

The aim is to get them to take responsibility for themselves and pride in their communities.

Exodus has more than 60 volunteers, of which more than half are former members.

Mid-week activity clubs are run in Worsbrough Common, Darfield, Birdwell, Staincross and town centre, which involve dance, drama, music, sport and games. Children are also encouraged to discuss issues relevant to their community.

Every week, there is a different subject relevant to 'citizenship' - such as graffiti, vandalism or respect for the elderly.

They have been nominated for a Proud of Barnsley award.
