A NORMANDY veteran who claimed to be older than he really was in order to join up and send money to his family has died aged 93.

Bill Pearson, of Belle Green Court Nursing Home in Cudworth, died on December 15, and his funeral will be held next week.

He was 17 when he joined up in 1940 and was a corporal in the Black Watch Royal Highlanders and the Royal Scots Fusiliers.

Bill’s daughter Sharon Sephton said: “Dad was only 17 but he lied about his age to go and send money to his mum and sister. I don’t think they checked, but I don’t think they were bothered. They just wanted the men.”

Bill landed on the beach at Arromanches on D Day, June 6 1944 - the day after his 21st birthday.
