IT’S one of Barnsley’s most iconic numberplates, but it’s been rarely seen for nearly five years.

Now ‘Rich T’ will ride again, as Richard Tolson’s 17-year-old son, Ellis, takes to the roads to learn how to drive.

Richard, 40, Barnsley College’s head of music who died five years ago, was known to everyone as Rich T, and had the numberplate afixed his beloved BMW car.

It was subject to several column inches in the Chronicle, often getting mentioned in the newspaper’s Ferret column.

His widow, Sarah, of St Andrew’s Drive, Darton, said Rich was offered a lot of money to part with the numberplate by McVities as part of their Rich T biscuits brand but he refused.

“It was really part of Rich, McVities made several offers to buy the plate but Rich said it wasn’t for sale,” she said.

She said they still have the car and have run it a few times, but not often.

“Ellis is so thrilled to have the numberplate, he has said that he will never sell it as it’s part of his dad that he wants to keep forever.

“People already do a double take as Ellis is the spitting image of his dad, I’m sure the car will also turn heads when people realise who is driving it.”
