EARLY celebrations for Nurses’ Day are taking place to thank all nurses at Barnsley Hospital for their hard work and dedication to the job.

Nurses’ Day will take place on Sunday but celebrations will be held in Barnsley today with parties, stickers and sweets.

Social media posts from Barnsley’s nurses are being shared showing the fun and nursing leaders will be touring the hospital capturing the enjoyment.

Heather McNair, the trust’s director of nursing, said: “Nursing in 2019 is a modern and dynamic profession - the roles are so varied and the skills are so vast.

“We just want to say thank you to all our nurses in Barnsley for dedicating their careers to delivering outstanding patient care.

“We should all take a moment or two to think about our gratitude for a nurse who has helped us or one of our loved ones.

“Nurses are out there every day, in hospitals and in the community changing lives and looking after people who need our care and support.

“They deserve the praise and recognition that Nurses’ Days offers.”

May 12 also marks the anniversary of the birth of one of the world’s most famous nurses, Florence Nightingale - a day which has been celebrated since 1965 and traditionally sees celebrations of her birth in places like Australia, China, the USA, Ireland and Singapore.

Tracey Monteith, a lead nurse at Barnsley Hospital has been in the nursing industry for nearly 25 years. She said: “I started my nurse training in 1995 and qualified in 1998.

“I’ve worked at Barnsley for just over ten years. I qualified in Huddersfield and then worked at Sheffield before moving to Barnsley.

“I am a Barnsley-born girl and have worked in critical care for 17 years.

“I left school not really knowing where my passion was, it was a friend that suggested I became a nurse and I immediately knew that’s what I wanted to be and I’ve never looked back.

“I still feel as passionate about nursing today.”
