A NURSE who cared for a dying woman has been nominated for a Proud of Barnsley award for her compassion, devotion and professionalism.

Sarah Reynolds is a nurse in the intensive care unit at Barnsley Hospital and looked after Erica Murray.

Mrs Murray, who later died, had suffered a severe stroke and heart attack, and while her family felt all the staff who cared for her were outstanding and dedicated, they feel Sarah went above and beyond.

Sarah was on duty for Mrs Murray's end of life care, and her son Paul said he, his father and his sister felt lucky Sarah was there to look after her. Paul said Sarah kept them informed and that nothing seemed too much trouble.

Paul said: "It was obvious she understood the heartache we were going through but not just that, she understood all the other emotions which take over - from being devastated to the humour as we talked about mum's life.

"She was professional throughout but almost felt part of the family, it was so nice to have someone who could explain what was happening in a compassionate, warm and relaxed manner. Sarah's devotion to her job shone through but more than that you could tell it was more than just a job to her.

"We had quite a lot of family visiting the ward while my mum was in and all commented how incredible Sarah was in how she cared for mum. She thoroughly deserves to be recognised for her commitment.

"Our thanks go to Sarah and the rest of the team in intensive care including the doctors everyone was fantastic with us."

Sarah said she was shocked and pleased to be nominated. "It's a lovely surprise. Working in the intensive care unit is an incredibly rewarding but sometimes difficult role.

"I feel privileged to work with such a fantastic team and to have made such a positive impact on this patient's family during a very difficult time. "It is an honour to share such important moments in people's lives."
