COLD and wet conditions did nothing to dampen the spirits of thousands of Barnsley fans who did their club proud in jubilant scenes in the town centre on Wednesday night.

Barnsley FC’s promotion-winning heroes came up Market Hill in an open top bus to be greeted by an estimated 3,500 adoring fans before making their way up to the town hall’s balcony to address them from above.

Mayor of Barnsley Coun Steve Green led the praise, of both the players and the fans.

“It’s been brilliant, and it’s been a fantastic turnout,” he said. “It’s great to see so many people come and support our team.”

Barnsley Central MP Dan Jarvis said: “I am so proud to have witnessed Barnsley be promoted to the Championship and it has really warmed my heart to see so many people here, especially with this weather. Barnsley’s promotion has boosted the confidence and spirit of the town and seeing so many people here just demonstrates how committed the town is to the club.

“The culture of football brings the town together and I could not be more proud.”

Goalkeeper and club captain Adam Davies said: “I’d like to thank all the fans for coming to support us and celebrate our promotion to the Championship.

“It was fantastic to see so many people even though it was pouring down with rain.”

Top scorer Kieffer Moore said: “It’s brilliant to see so many fans here. We’ve pictured this moment since the start of the season and it’s massive to see that we’ve achieved it.

“We are excited for the next season and we look forward to being part of the Championship.”
