EFFORTS to reduce the number of illegal off-road vehicles will be a top priority for local police in 2017, it has been announced.

An operation by the Barnsley East Local Policing Team took place on December 11 and although it failed to apprehend any bikers, the disappointing result will not scupper further action days according to Sergeant Brad Wynne.

“We patrolled hotspot areas in both Great Houghton and Grimethorpe from 10am to 3pm but unfortunately we didn’t come across any vehicles. It’s just the luck of the draw on the given day but at least it’s got the ball rolling and it tells people that we won’t tolerate it.

“We are intent on making a change and there will be a lot more action days in the future - residents can be assured of that. The message is that this was the first of many and next year will see a far bigger clampdown.”
