Chris O'Grady says Barnsley should be looking towards the Championship's top ten 'for starters' in the coming season.

The 27-year-old striker, who made a crucial contribution to the Reds' survival while on loan from Sheffield Wednesday last season, joined Barnsley on a two-year deal on Tuesday.

"I am delighted to sign and it is perfect timing just before we go back into training for pre-season," O'Grady told the Chronicle.

"I hope we can start out how we finished last season. It is fresh in our memories and it should mean that we take that momentum into the new season. "We'll be looking to get in the top ten for starters then see how far we can go. We know we have got quality in the team and we have a great bond after what happened last season."

Before the end of last season, O'Grady and Barnsley made clear that they wanted to make the loan deal permanent but the negotiations rumbled on for more than a month with Owls boss Dave Jones once telling the Reds to 'put up or shut up.'

"There was a bit of uncertainty at one point," said O'Grady.

"But if one club doesn't want me and another club does then it is only going to go one way. After the way the season finished I was quite confident that the move would happen and Flicks (manager David Flitcroft) told me he wanted to make it a priority signing.

"I am enthusiastic about the future at Barnsley.  When I was a young player I was always looking to establish myself but I have done that now. I am in a good place and I want to show what I can do at the highest level I can."

O'Grady is happy that he will have a Barnsley shirt to fill the empty space in the gym in his Darton home after his top from last season went missing at the LoveLife festival last month.
