THE ombudsman for health has been asked to investigate an ophthalmology department after a Barnsley woman narrowly escaped unnecessary eye surgery.

Nancy Hallas, 48, of Park Road, Worsbrough, was scheduled to have part of her eyelid removed after being referred to the ophthalmology clinic at Barnsley Hospital, which is run by Rotherham NHS.

But she cancelled the surgery after questioning why one doctor said she had a 'glaucoma type' problem and optic nerve damage, and another said her eyelid was 'hanging too low'.

Both doctors were eventually overruled by a consultant who said her eyesight was perfect.

Anne Crompton, deputy chief nurse at Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust said: "The Trust is committed to learning from patient feedback and would like to continue to work with Mrs Hallas to resolve her concerns."
