BARNSLEY residents are to lose the automatic right to have their waste and recycling bins collected from outside their home when they pass their 80th birthday, the council has confirmed.

Until now, anyone reaching that age has been able to ask that bin lorry staff collect their bins rather than putting them out on the pavement - providing there is no-one else younger and able in the house.

But that is changing and in future those asking for the service will have to prove they have a need for help, a change which should help the council keep on top of the costs of providing the service as the population continues to age.

Also in future, recycling bins will be emptied for those on the 'assisted' scheme only when necessary.

A £10 registration fee will also have to be paid by those signing up in future and renewed annually at the same cost.

Those already on the scheme will not be affected by the charges, however.
